Actress Samira Wiley has withdrawn from the upcoming Broadway revival of Proof due to a treatable medical condition, producers announced Tuesday. The Emmy-winning performer, known for roles in Orange Is the New Black and The Handmaid’s Tale, stepped away from the production to focus on her health, with the show expressing full support for her decision.
Wiley had been set to make her Broadway debut in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by David Auburn, appearing alongside Ayo Edebiri, Don Cheadle, and Jin Ha. The revival, directed by Thomas Kail, is scheduled to begin previews Mar. 31, 2026, at the Booth Theatre, with an official opening night set for Apr. 16, 2026, in a limited 16-week engagement.
Producers confirmed that Tony Award-winning actress Kara Young will take over the role of Claire. Young, who recently made history with consecutive Tony wins, joins a high-profile production that marks the first Broadway revival of Proof since its original 2000 run. The play follows a young woman grappling with her late father’s legacy as a brilliant but troubled mathematician, exploring themes of genius, mental health, and identity.
When Proof first opened on Broadway in 2000, the main cast included Mary-Louise Parker as Catherine; Larry Bryggman as Robert; Johanna Day as Claire; and Ben Shenkman as Hal. That production was hugely successful – winning the Tony Award for Best Play and Best Actress in a Play for Parker. The role of Catherine was later played by Jennifer Jason Leigh and Anne Heche, respectively. Neil Patrick Harris and Josh Hamilton also starred.
