The 5th Avenue Theatre Company’s Rising Star Project will spotlight young talent from across Washington state later this month as students mount a full production of Jesus Christ Superstar, running May 28–30, 2026.
The student‑led staging reimagines Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s landmark rock opera, known for its electrifying score and contemporary retelling of the final days of Jesus Christ through the eyes of Judas. The production offers audiences a fresh perspective on classics such as “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” and “Gethsemane.”
The Rising Star Project, a tuition‑free mentorship program launched in 2011, pairs students with professional artists and administrators to produce a full mainstage musical. Participants work across performance, design, technology, artistic leadership, and arts administration, gaining hands‑on experience in every aspect of mounting a large‑scale show.
“Every year, the Rising Star Project gives students the opportunity to challenge themselves artistically while building lasting connections and professional skills,” said associate director of education Jess Ellison. “Jesus Christ Superstar is an ambitious, emotionally charged piece, and watching students rise to the challenge has been inspiring.”
This year’s cohort includes 71 students representing 41 schools statewide, from middle school through college.
Full production details, including creative information and background on the musical, are available on The 5th Avenue Theatre’s official show page: Jesus Christ Superstar – 5th Avenue Theatre. For student-led performance tickets, please visit this page.
